Hey !

I wanted to talk about something quite important and somehow pretty controversial these days: the COVID-19 vaccine. I am not here to convince you of anything, , but I do believe that knowledge is power and that we need to be informedโ€” properly informed.

As a functional nutritionist, I am trained to look at the root cause of dysfunctions within the body and address those through lifestyle, food, and mindset. I know that true health cannot be achieved without proper nutrition, regular exercise and good interpersonal relationships. In regards to Covid-19, it is also true that unhealthy individuals have worse outcomes than healthy individuals upon infection. I too got COVID early on and even though it was rough, it was mild compared to most people I know who have had it. It wasn't a coincidence: I am healthy from the inside out therefore I had better COVID outcomes.

Because I am an NTP, I consider diet and lifestyle to be the most important factors for our overall health. For example, we don't know yet if the vaccine against covid is not as effective on obese people, but we do know for sure that the flu vaccine efficacy rate lowers in obese individuals. However, as a healthy person (and even if I wasn't) I am still choosing to get the vaccine after careful consideration.

I am not gonna lie, I was hesitant at first. The internet is out of control and people rightfully so, especially people of color, distruss the system. I am very against big pharma because they profit off our state of disease and push medications for things that can be reversed and even prevented with diet and lifestyle.

But I am a nutritionist, not an epidemiologist or an infectious disease expert. So, in order to make the decision I went for a source that I trust. I went for a resource that shares the same principles as I do about prevention of illness and how important it is to look at the root cause of disease rather than masking the symptoms with pills. That resource is the Institute of Functional Medicine.

Back in February I attended a comprehensive webinar from the IFM about the safety and efficacy of covid vaccines. It gives perspectives from different functional medicine doctors. I am linking it here if you would like to see it. It's like 4 hours worth of informational video between the February and March webinars. They also talk about important considerations such as: pregnant women, people going through chemotherapy, people who just had surgery, etc.

Another, more digestible resource is Laurel Bristow, an infectious disease specialist that answers a lot of questions about COVID, the vaccine, and the current research. Everything is saved on her Insta Story Highlights.

I hope this information helps!
